An Aberdeen engineering and design business’s innovative approach to delivering maintenance and modification projects has led to it securing a major contract and expanding into other industry sectors. Step Change Engineering has been awarded engineering and support services with Repsol Sinopec Resources UK Limited. The agreement cements Step Change Engineering’s ambition to become a major tier 2 contractor in the North Sea oil and gas market.

The finalists in the 2016 Offshore Achievement Awards have been announced and Step Change Engineering has been shortlisted in the final 3 for the Innovator Award. Organised by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Aberdeen section, the Offshore Achievement Awards celebrate the significant contributions made by a wide range of businesses to the UK offshore energy sector.
Step Change Engineering has been invited to speak at the forthcoming Energy Institute monthly meeting in December. This event will focus on the historical approach to engineering and design of Offshore facilities, and ways in which significant improvements can be made in terms of costs and schedules. Step Change Engineering, established eight months ago, has secured a clutch of new orders in the last two months as a result of its ability to deliver significant cost and schedule savings to clients by efficient use of engineering systems and new technology.

Step Change Engineering has recently used a handheld IR scanning device on an offshore FPSO capturing point cloud data. When used in conjunction with AutoCAD Plant 3D, the data captured has proven extremely successful for piping layout and structural design as well as for the production of fabrication isometrics. Scans can take between 5 and 15 minutes and are typically accurate to 0.5%. Step Change Engineering is currently working with tablet based hand held 3D scanners to maximise the benefits of these tablet-based devices for clients with onshore and offshore assets. Combined with our technology, the tablet-based 3D scanners are simple to use and provide a means of instantly capturing data and performing detailed surveys on areas that are traditionally difficult to access. The benefits are multiple: Not only is there a reduced need for helicopter seats and beds offshore, the scanner can also eliminate the requirement for scaffolding and overside/underdeck working.
