Innovative Approach Leading Growth At Step Change Engineering

An Aberdeen engineering and design business’s innovative approach to delivering maintenance and modification projects has led to it securing a major contract and expanding into other industry sectors.

Step Change Engineering has been awarded engineering and support services with Repsol Sinopec Resources UK Limited. The agreement cements Step Change Engineering’s ambition to become a major tier 2 contractor in the North Sea oil and gas market.

The Repsol Sinopec contract, along with an increasing order book of work from other clients, will lead to the creation of around 20 new jobs before the end of the year, which will increase its workforce to over 50.

Established in October 2014, Step Change Engineering was created to provide an innovative and technology led approach to delivering design and engineering solutions to the oil and gas industry. The firm’s ability to deliver savings of up to 90% on project schedules and 70% on engineering costs, aligns with the oil and gas industry’s drive to reduce expenditure and improve efficiency.

Alongside its project work with leading North Sea operators, Step Change Engineering has also secured work for a Scottish distillery, and most recently an overseas refinery.

In its first project in the food and drink manufacturing industry, Step Change Engineering has worked with Forsyths Ltd to deliver survey, engineering and design work for a whisky distillery. The firm are utilising its 3D data capture technology and advanced engineering software to quickly deliver the distillery’s equipment layout and engineering design.

Step Change Engineering’s use of technology and advanced engineering software to deliver significant cost and time savings on client projects has also been acknowledged with an award nomination. The firm is shortlisted as a finalist in the innovation category at next month’s Gold Awards, organised by The Press & Journal. Winners will be announced on Thursday, 08 September. This latest nomination follows the firm reaching the finals of the innovation category at the Offshore Achievement Awards earlier this year.

Step Change Engineering managing director John Wilson said: “Securing the work with Repsol Sinopec Resources UK is an important milestone for us and one that will aid our growth. In awarding multiple contracts, Repsol Sinopec is seeking to drive innovation and increase efficiencies as it transforms its operations for the long-term. We are seeing these drivers reflected right across the industry.

“This approach mirrors the business model we have adopted and the investments we have made in building Step Change Engineering into a specialist provider for repairs, modifications and small projects. We have demonstrated that our unique approach delivers considerable savings to our customers, including the potential to eliminate site surveys, which is of particular importance for offshore installations and remote onshore sites.”

“Although the oil and gas sector is our core focus, the distillery project illustrates how our technology and approach can be applied to different industries to deliver similar levels of efficiency and cost savings. The potential for this to be replicated across other sectors is extremely exciting and offers scalability for the business.”
